Writing pages

Images

Add screenshots and pictures to a page by uploading, pasting or dragging them in, then resize, align and caption them in place. This page covers adding images, the size and storage limits, and editing images on the page.

Who can add images

Anyone who can edit the page can add images, on every plan. If image uploads aren't available, the Insert image button and the Image item in the / menu don't appear, and pasted images aren't uploaded.

Add an image

Any of these works:

  • Toolbar: click Insert image and choose one or more files.
  • Block menu: type / at the start of a line and choose Image.
  • Paste: copy an image, for example a screenshot, and paste it into the page.
  • Drag and drop: drag image files from your computer onto the page. They land where you drop them.
  • Paste an image address: with nothing selected, paste the address of an image on the web, such as https://example.com/diagram.png. Folioso fetches the image and stores its own copy, so the page doesn't depend on the other site. If the address isn't an image, it's pasted as a link instead.

While an image is being added, a progress message shows Uploading image…, Processing image… and Saving image…, or Fetching image… for an address. You can add several images at once.

Formats and limits

  • Formats: PNG, JPEG, GIF, WebP and AVIF. Folioso converts every image to WebP when it stores it, which keeps pages fast. Animated images are stored as a still image.
  • Dimensions: images over 25 megapixels are refused.
  • Upload rate: up to 50 images an hour per person.

Largest image per plan

Your plan sets the largest single image you can upload. Whatever the plan, no single image can be over 25 MB. An image over your limit is refused with "Images must be under … MB on your plan." See the pricing page for each plan's limit.

Storage

Images count towards your organisation's image storage, which everyone in it shares. The allowance depends on your plan and, on a per-seat plan, on the number of seats. When an upload would take the organisation over its allowance, it's refused and the message suggests asking an organisation admin to upgrade. Images already on pages are never removed. See Uploads.

Caption an image

Click the image and type in Add a caption… below it. Press Enter, or click away, to save. The caption is also the image's alt text, which screen readers announce, so describe what the image shows. Captions can be up to 500 characters, and they're included in search.

Resize an image

  • Drag: click the image, then drag one of its corner handles. An image can't be narrower than 80 pixels or wider than the page.
  • Keyboard: click the image, press Tab to reach the resize handle, then use the arrow keys to make it 10 pixels wider or narrower, or hold Shift for 50 pixels.
  • Full width: click Full width below the image to fill the width of the page. Click it again to undo.

Align an image

Click the image, then use Align left, Align centre or Align right on the toolbar, or the alignment shortcuts in Formatting text.

View an image full size

Click Expand below the image to open it in a viewer. Click Close or press Escape to go back.

Move or remove an image

  • Move: drag the image to another place on the page.
  • Remove: click the image to select it and press Backspace or Delete.

When an image won't load

If the image file can't be loaded, the page shows Image unavailable in its place. Ask whoever added it to upload it again.

Images elsewhere

  • Images appear on pages you share and on public links, and in PDF exports.
  • Export as Markdown writes each image as a Markdown image pointing at its address in Folioso, with its caption as the alt text.
  • When you're editing together, an image someone else is resizing or captioning is locked for you, with a note saying who's editing it.
