Editing together

When several people open the same page, Folioso keeps everyone's screen in sync as they type, with live cursors and faces in the header. This page explains when live editing switches on, what you'll see, and how conflicts are avoided.

When live editing is on

Live editing is part of every plan. It switches on automatically for a page that other people can reach:

  • the page is shared with someone, by email or with a public link, or
  • the page isn't private and its space has more than one member.

A page only you can reach, such as a page in My space that you haven't shared, opens as a normal single-person page. When a live page opens, you may briefly see Connecting to live session… while Folioso joins it.

What you'll see

  • Who's here. The header shows a face for everyone else on the page. Hover over one to see their name and whether they're editing or viewing.
  • Live cursors. Each editor's cursor and selection appear in the text in their own colour, labelled with their name and picture.
  • Changes as they happen. Text, formatting, code blocks, diagrams and every other part of the page update for everyone as they're typed. The title updates too.
  • Who edited last. The line under the title shows who last changed the page.

People who can only view the page see the changes and cursors live, but can't type.

Saving

You don't need to do anything. While you're editing together, the page saves about two and a half seconds after the last change, and one person's editor saves on everyone's behalf. The header shows Saving… and Saved as usual. Ctrl S (⌘S on a Mac) saves straight away.

Avoiding clashes

Two people can type in the same paragraph at once, and Folioso merges their changes. A few things are held back so that one person can't undo another's work by accident:

  • Images, diagrams and alert boxes. While someone is working on one, such as resizing an image, editing a diagram's source or typing in an alert box, it's locked for everyone else. Hover over it to see who's editing, for example "Sam is editing this diagram".
  • Tables. While someone else is in a table, you can still type in its cells, but you can't add, move or delete rows and columns, or delete the table. A message tells you who's in it.

These locks are released as soon as the other person moves on.

Undo

Ctrl Z (⌘Z on a Mac) undoes your own recent changes, not other people's.

When access changes

If your access to the page changes while you have it open, for example an owner turns your edit access into view-only, your editor updates to match. If you lose edit access with changes that couldn't be saved, a Your access changed dialog explains what happened. Copy anything you need from the screen, then click Reload page.

If the page is deleted while you're on it, you're taken off it.

When a snapshot is restored

If someone restores an earlier version of the page from its version history, everyone's editor reloads the restored version, with the message "This page's content was replaced, so it has been reloaded." Changes that weren't saved before the restore aren't kept, so it's worth checking with your colleagues before restoring a busy page.

The same happens when an integration replaces the page's content through the API.
