Exporting pages
Export a page as a PDF to send or print, or as a Markdown file to use in a repository or another tool. This page covers both, who can export, and what each format includes.
Where to find export
- In the editor, click More actions in the page header and choose Export as PDF or Export as Markdown. This menu is for people with the Editor or Admin role in the space and for the page's author.
- On All Pages, open a page's Page actions menu. Anyone who can see the page there can export it, viewers included.
People who can open a page only because it was shared with them don't get either menu.
To export everything you've written at once, use the data export in your settings instead. See Exporting your data.
Export as PDF
PDF export is available if your plan includes it. If it doesn't, Export as PDF carries a Pro badge and opens an upgrade prompt. See the pricing page.
- Choose Export as PDF.
- Folioso builds the PDF. The dialog shows "Building your PDF of …", which usually takes a few seconds. You can keep working while you wait.
- When it says Your PDF is ready, click Download PDF.
The PDF has the page's formatting, highlighted code, diagrams and images.
If you close the dialog
If you close the dialog before downloading, Folioso emails you a link a few minutes after the PDF is ready, with the subject 'Your PDF of "…" is ready'. You'll only get the email if you haven't already downloaded the file.
- The download link only works when you're signed in to your own account. It isn't a shareable link.
- The file is kept for 7 days. After that, export the page again.
- You must still be able to open the page when you download. If the page is deleted or your access is removed in the meantime, the download stops working.
If the export takes longer than usual, the dialog says "This is taking longer than expected." and you can close it and wait for the email.
Limits
You can start up to 4 PDF exports an hour. After that the dialog says "You have reached the export limit for this hour. Try again later."
Export as Markdown
Markdown export is available on every plan. Choose Export as Markdown and your browser downloads a .md file straight away, named after the page's title.
The file starts with the page's title as a heading, followed by the content:
| In the page | In the Markdown |
|---|---|
| Bold, italic, strikethrough, inline code, links | The usual Markdown markers |
| Headings, lists, task lists, quotes, dividers | Markdown headings, lists, - [ ] tasks, > quotes and --- |
| Tables | Markdown tables |
| Code blocks | Fenced code blocks with their language |
| Diagrams | Fenced mermaid or plantuml blocks with the diagram's source |
| Alert boxes | GitHub alerts: [!NOTE], [!TIP], [!WARNING] or [!CAUTION] |
| Images | Markdown images that point at the image's address, with the caption as alt text |
| Page links | Links with the page's title and address, or Restricted page if you can't open it |
| Mentions | @Name |
Underline and text alignment have no Markdown equivalent, so they're left out. Images aren't copied into the file: it links to them where they're stored in Folioso.
The export includes everything on your screen, even changes that haven't saved yet.
